Investigation of the Public Knowledge Level about Rational Antibiotic Use

Abstract

Background: Antimicrobial agents are among the most commonly used drugs in society. It is also the group of drugs with the highest misuse rate. Our aim in this study is to investigate the level of knowledge of the public about the use of antibiotic drugs. Materials and methods: This study was conducted between 06.11.2022-26.11.2022 with the participation of 459 people aged 18 and over. Participants filled outquestionnaires we sent online. Our data collection form consists of 11 questions. Results: In this study, the rate of women is 75.8% and 64.7% of the participants are between the ages of 18-24. While 82.1% of the participants stated that they did not use the remaining antibiotics in their next illness, 80.6% did not go to the hospital and did not ask the doctor to prescribe antibiotics. Gender, reading in health departments and access to health-related information did not have a significant relationship between increased use of antibiotics and going to the hospital to prescribe antibiotics (p>0.05). Conclusion: The emergence of resistant bacteria is the result of widespread and misuse of antibiotics. The fact that there is no difference between reading status and drug use in health departments shows that information should be made for everyone. In addition, considering that the rate of people accessing health-related information over the internet is not low, it may be beneficial to spread information in virtual environments.
