Selection of the Solar Power Plants with CSP Technologies by Combined ANP-PROMETHEE Approach

Abstract

Many countries around the world must implement the sustainable energy policies which based on the economical, efficiency and environmental awareness parameters to maintain their strengths globally and to raise the level of social prosperity. Spreading the use of renewable resources in electricity generation provides significant advantages to the countries for following the sustainable energy policies, when considering the strong impact of these resources on three pillars of sustainability.  Turkey is a rich country in terms of renewable energy resource potential, and solar energy ranks the first with a potential of 380 billion kWh per year. Solar energy that can meet the annual total energy consumption exceedingly with high potential by itself, has not been utilized enough to generate electricity in Turkey, where 278.3 billion kWh of electricity is consumed in 2016 is the highest energy utilization year of all time. Therefore, The Government of the Republic of Turkey has taken a series of steps to ensure that solar energy is used more and more in electricity generation. In this context in this study, strategic objectives of the government for solar energy are taken as reference, and Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC), Linear Fresnel Reflector (LFR), Central Receiver System (Molten Salt) (CRS-MS), Central Receiver System (Superheated Steam) (CRS-SHS) and Parabolic Dish Systems (PDS), are the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies which enable the electricity generation from solar energy, are evaluated with sixteen criteria under the four main criteria consisting the titles of cost, social, technical and technology. These criteria are weighted by the ANP (Analytic Network Process) method, which provides to be considered the relations between them, and priority order of five alternative CSP technologies in Turkey’s conditions is obtained by using these criteria in PROMETHEE (The Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation) method is an outranking algorithm, often used in the literature and has many advantages.
