Abstract
In this study, the biaxial tensile strength of epoxy-based composite plates formed by non-hybrid and three different inter-ply hybrid layering of unidirectional carbon and glass fiber fabrics was investigated. Carbon/epoxy, glass/epoxy, and hybrid carbon-glass/epoxy composites were subjected to biaxial tensile tests at room temperature. Test results showed that carbon-glass/epoxy hybridization had a significant/positive effect on the tensile strength of composites. Considering all cases, the highest tensile strengths were obtained in Ref-C samples, while the lowest strengths were obtained in Ref-G samples. Among the hybrid composites, 3C1G had the highest tensile strength while the lowest tensile strength was obtained for 1C1G. Considering the economic situation, 2C2G composites can be preferred to 3C1G composite or Ref-C composite. The strain values in the horizontal and vertical directions measured with the help of strain scales attached to the mid-surface region of the samples. It is seen that the horizontal and vertical strains give close values. The samples generally showed similar behaviors in both axes. Tensile damage occurred in the form of delamination, fiber breakage and fiber-matrix interface separation.
