The Course of Marginal Prospensity Of Consume in the Frame of Absolute Income Hypotesis: The Case of Turkey Between 2006Q1-2019Q4

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the trend of Marginal Prospensity to Consume which is important for determining economical policies and predicting the course of economy over the years in Turkey. Based on Keynes’s Absolute Income hypothesis, disposable income is associated with consumption. For this purpose, data covering the final consumption expenditures and disposable income variables between 2006Q1 - 2019Q4 were used. The long-term relationship between the variables which was determined by the Johansen Cointegration test was investigated with the estimator of DOLS (Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares). However, the marginal consumption tendency was not estimated for a single period, but for the 27-quarter period between 2006 - 2019 and 2013-2019, and was intended to analyze its trend over time. When we look at the series consisting of 27 different prospensity of marginal consumption estimated in this way, there is a clear decrease in the level. This observation was tested by Lee Strazicich LM Unit Root Test which allows to structural break. According to the test result, the series has a clear structural break on the level and decreased to a lower level in the period following 2008 economic crisis compared to period before the crisis.

Mutlak Gelir Hipotezi Çerçevesinde Marjinal Tüketim Eğiliminin Seyri 2006q1 – 2019q4 Türkiye Örneği

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, ekonomi politikalarının belirlenmesi ve ekonomik gidişatın kestirilebilmesi açısından oldukça önemli olan marjinal tüketim eğiliminin, yıllar içindeki seyrini Türkiye için araştırmaktır. Bu amaçla Keynes’in Mutlak Gelir Hipotezi’nden yola çıkılarak harcanabilir gelir ile tüketim ilişkilendirilmiştir. Nihai tüketim harcamaları ve harcanabilir gelir değişkenlerine ait 2006Q1 – 2019Q4 arasını kapsayan veriler kullanılmıştır. Eşbütünleşik olduğu Johensen Eşbütünleşme testi ile belirlenen değişkenler arasındaki uzun dönemli ilişki DOLS (Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares, Dinamik En Küçük Kareler) tahmincisi ile araştırılmıştır. Ancak marjinal tüketim eğilimi tek bir dönem için değil 2006 – 2019 dönemi ile 2013-2019 dönemi arasındaki, çeyreklik bazdaki 27 dönem için ayrı ayrı tahmin edilip, zaman içindeki seyri analiz edilmek istenmiştir. Bu şekilde tahmin edilen 27 farklı marjinal tüketim eğiliminden elde edilen seriye bakıldığında düzeyde bariz bir düşüş olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu gözlem de yapısal kırılmaya izin veren Lee Strazicich LM Birim Kök Testi ile sınanmıştır. Buna göre Türkiye’de marjinal tüketim eğilimi düzeyde yapısal kırılmaya uğramış ve 2008 krizin takip eden dönemde öncesine göre daha düşük bir düzeye gerilemiştir.
