The Impact of Perceived Authenticity on Heritage Responsibility: The Role of Local Identity and Perceived Tourism Anxiety

Abstract

The primary aim of this study was to examine the effect of perceived authenticity (PA) on heritage responsibility (HR) within the context of the local community in Kemaliye (Erzincan), and to identify the mediating role of local identity (LI) and the moderating role of perceived anxiety from tourism (PAT) in this relationship. The research seeks to evaluate the direct, indirect, and interactional relationships among these variables within a comprehensive model framework. Kemaliye’s inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, its “Cittaslow” designation, along with its natural and historical assets and increasing tourism pressure, make it a significant site for examining local residents’ perceptions of tourism. The study population consists of the residents of Kemaliye. Data were collected from 188 respondents through a convenience sampling method using a survey technique. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS and AMOS software, and PROCESS Macro model 5 was employed to test the proposed model. The findings reveal that LI mediates the effect of PA on HR, while PAT moderates this relationship, amplifying its strength. The study suggests that enhancing PA can encourage HR and tourism supportive behaviors among the local population. Implications for destination managers are discussed along with practical recommendations. Although the study focuses on Kemaliye, the findings provide insights that can inform heritage management and community engagement strategies in other cultural heritage destinations facing similar tourism pressures.
