YouGlish in English language education: A systematic review of relevant publications

Abstract

Mobile-assisted learning technologies have received considerable attention recently due to their potential in helping learners improve foreign language proficiency. Despite being a promising computer-assisted tool, YouGlish, a mobile English learning tool, has received limited recognition from researchers worldwide, leaving a diverse gap in the literature regarding its pedagogical affordances and drawbacks. To this end, this study aims to document the research on YouGlish in English language education contexts and identify its technical and pedagogical advantages and disadvantages. It also aims to guide future research by revealing the existing research gaps. By adopting the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, the researchers conducted a systematic content analysis of all publications (e.g., research articles, reviews, conference papers) on YouGlish in English published until 2024. The results indicate the potential affordances of YouGlish. However, there are considerable research gaps since YouGlish is an emerging technological tool. Therefore, numerous studies employing diverse research methods, target populations, and languages across different research contexts are needed to corroborate the current study’s findings.
