Assessing Intensive Care Nurses' Knowledge Levels in Preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 52 - 65, 25.04.2025

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the knowledge level of nurses employed in adult intensive care units regarding evidence-based practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections. Conducted as a descriptive study, this research involved 229 nurses from 34 adult intensive care units across 15 hospitals within a Turkish Health Group. The data collection took place between August 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022. A questionnaire, comprising inquiries about nurses' socio-demographic characteristics and evidence-based practices in preventing healthcare-associated infections, served as the primary data collection tool. Statistical analyses, including mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, frequency, and percentage calculations, along with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Mann-Whitney U test in Independent Groups, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Mann-Whitney U analysis with Bonferroni correction for post hoc analysis, were employed. A significance level of p<0.05 was set for all results. The average knowledge score among nurses regarding evidence-based practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections was determined to be 29.63±4.46 out of a total of 45 points. Additionally, it was observed that the educational background, gender, and education related to healthcare-associated infections significantly influenced their average knowledge scores (p<0.05). The study outcomes highlight a deficiency in the knowledge level of intensive care nurses concerning the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Factors such as gender, educational background, and education related to healthcare-associated infections were identified as influencing factors on this knowledge level. These findings underscore the importance of providing education for nurses as a crucial strategy in preventing healthcare-associated infections.

Yoğun Bakım Hemşirelerinin Sağlık Hizmetiyle İlişkili Enfeksiyonları Önlemeye Yönelik Bilgi Düzeylerinin Belirlenmesi

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 52 - 65, 25.04.2025
