Hemşirelik Öğrencilerinin Tıbbi Hata ile Karşılaşma Durumları

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 37 - 51, 25.04.2025

Abstract

Nursing Students' Encounters with Medical Errors

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 37 - 51, 25.04.2025

Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify the categories and reasons behind medical errors experienced by nursing students during their clinical education. A descriptive study was carried out involving 206 students from the nursing faculty at a university. The study included second, third, and fourth-year students who consistently participated in clinical practice. Data were gathered through face-to-face interviews using The Personal Information Form and The Medical Error Scale for Nursing Students. The study revealed that the most prevalent types of medical errors encountered by students included nosocomial infections (83.8%), follow-up and material errors (83.8%), and medication administration errors (70.3%). Key factors contributing to these medical errors were identified as low nurse staffing levels (82%), fatigue (75.7%), a high number of patients (73.8%), and a heavy workload (70.9%). The majority of students expressed their intention to report a medical error, indicating that they would notify both the responsible nurse and the overseeing instructor. Additionally, there was a significant association between being female, being 21 years old or older, and being in the fourth year, and displaying increased caution and control regarding medical errors compared to second-year students. During their clinical training, students confront various medical errors, and it is essential that all treatment errors are approached with care and in a controlled manner. It is recommended that students be educated on the importance of reporting any medical errors they either make or observe, along with an understanding of the underlying causes of these errors.
