Expression of endothelial and inducible nitric oxide synthases in tubal ectopic pregnancy: an immunohistochemical evaluation

Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the expression of endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS) and inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) in fallopian tubes on Ectopic Pregnancy (EP). Material and Method: The study was conducted on non-pregnant women (n=10), women with healthy pregnancy (n=7) and ectopic pregrancy (n=10). eNOS and iNOS levels in tubal tissues were examined immunohistochemically in all groups. Immunostaining was evaluated by H-SCORE analysis in epithelium, subepithelium, muscle and vessel tissues. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. Results: This study showed that eNOS and iNOS were expressed in the epithelium, muscle and blood vessels of the fallopian tube. The EP group showed a higher eNOS expression in both the epithelium and subepithelium of fallopian tubes, while it showed a higher iNOS expression in the epithelium of fallopian tubes. The expressions of these two NOS isoforms were not significantly different in the muscular and vascular regions of the fallopian tubes. The expressions of eNOS and iNOS are increased in tubal epithelium of EP. Conclusion: This information may indicate that these two Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) isoforms induce facilitatory effects for implantation in ciliated and secretory cells of luminal epithelium that can lead to the formation of a suitable microenvironment for EP.
