Vaginal Culture Results in Prepubertal Girls with Vulvovaginal Infection

Year 2016, Volume: 13 Issue: 2, 58 - 60, 01.04.2016

Abstract

Aim: Vulvovaginal infections are the most common gynecological problem in prepubertal girls. We aimed to evaluate the clinical features and results of vaginal cultures in prepubertal girls attended with vulvovaginitis in our clinic in this study.Material and Methods: In this retrospective study the clinical features and vaginal culture results of prepubertal girls diagnosed with vulvovaginitis in gynecology clinic at Dr Sami Ulus Women’s Health and Children Teaching and Research Hospital between January 2012 and January 2014 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: A total of 189 patients were included in the study. Mean age of the patients was 6.12±2.9. The most common presenting symptoms were vaginal discharge and vulvar redness 28.4%, 14.8%; respectively . The most common isolated pathogenic microorganism was group A β-Hemolytic Streptococcus 10.58 % followed by Haemophilus Influenzae 4.23 % . The most common isolated non-pathogenic microorganisms were Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus Aureus 9.52%, 6.34 %; respectively .Conclusion: The etiopathogenesis of vulvovaginitis and vaginal culture findings in prepubertal girls differ from reproductive and menopausal aged women. Vulvovaginitis in prepubertal girls was most commonly caused by pathogens originating from upper respiratory tract and related with the symptoms of vaginal discharge and redness.

Vulvovajinal Enfeksiyonu olan Kız Çocuklarında Vajinal Kültür Sonuçları

Year 2016, Volume: 13 Issue: 2, 58 - 60, 01.04.2016
