The Place of Memoirs and Diaries in History Writing and the Example of the Caucasian Front in the First World War
Öz
The atmosphere of conflict among different states at the beginning of the 20th century indicated that a world war was going to erupt. Finally, on June 28th 1914, when the Austria-Hungarian crown prince Francis Ferdinand was killed by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, the first spark to start the war realized. Immediately after the incident, Austria gave Serbia a 48-hour ultimatum. When the Serbs did not give a positive response to this, Austria bombarded Belgrade on July 28th 1914, and in this way the war started on Balkan territory. The blocs in the war became even clearer as Russia sided with Serbia and Germany sided with Austria, as they declared mobilization and as Britain and France supported Russia.
When the Ottoman State attended to the first World War and battled with Russia, the Armenians betrayed the Ottomans by making a cooperation with Russia and sabotaged at the back of the fronts through rebellions. Therefor the Ottoman State, which was struggling with enemy forces, had gone into difficulty and had to take some precautions. The Armenians who were living near the fronts were removed from these regions and impelledto the south of the state.
In this article, a comparative evaluation of the Caucasian Front will be presented, using the works titled “Büyük Harbde Türk Harbi” by Major Larcher, “Harb-i Umûmide Osmânlı Cepheleri Vakâyii” by Süleymaniyeli Mehmed Emin Bey, “İki Komite İki Kıtal” by Ahmet Refik Altınay, “Anılarım (1913-1922)” by Cemal Paşa, “Türkiye’de Beş Sene” by Liman Von Sanders, “Bir Onbaşının Doğu Cephesi Günlüğü (1914-1915)” by Ali Rıza Bey, “İttihat ve Terakki’den Cumhuriyet’e Bitmeyen Savaş” by Halil Paşa and “Doğunun Kurtuluşu” by Kazım Karabekir.
