Analysis of Cadaver Theses in Türkiye

Abstract

Aim: To examine postgraduate theses written in Türkiye using the keyword "cadaver." Methods: A systematic search was carried out in the Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center using the keyword “cadaver”, and a total of 155 theses published between 1989 and 2025 were included in the analysis. All full-text theses obtained were analyzed based on bibliographic data and categorical variables such as study characteristics, thesis type, advisor title, research method and preservation technique. Results: Most of the theses were written by medical faculty residents (n = 88, 56.77%), and the University of Health Sciences had the highest number of theses (n = 19, 12.26%). Among academic departments, Anatomy ranked first regarding cadaver use (n = 56, 36.13%). The cranial or head region was the most frequently examined anatomical area (n = 44, 28.4%). While the number of theses on cadavers reached its peak in 2023, it was observed that no studies were conducted on this subject between 1991 and 2003. Approximately half of the theses (50.3%) were classified under ‘‘Surgical and Clinical Anatomy’’ theme topic defined by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) 2026. Considering the Anatomy Connected 2026 congress topics, it was seen that 11.6% of the theses were in the ‘‘Imaging’’ category. In contrast, theses in ethics and law are 5.8%. Conclusion: The findings are parallel to the international literature and congress titles. It confirms that cadaveric dissection continues to play a central role in education, imaging, and surgical technique development.

Türkiye'deki Kadavra Tezlerinin Analizi

Öz

Amaç: Türkiye'de "kadavra" anahtar kelimesi kullanılarak yazılmış lisansüstü tezleri incelemektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Yükseköğretim Kurulu Ulusal Tez Merkezi'nde "kadavra" anahtar kelimesi kullanılarak sistematik bir tarama yapıldı ve 1989-2025 yılları arasında yayınlanan toplam 155 tez analize dahil edildi. Elde edilen tam metin tezler, bibliyografik veriler ve çalışma özellikleri, tez türü, danışman unvanı, araştırma yöntemi ve koruma tekniği gibi kategorik değişkenler analiz edildi. Bulgular: Tezlerin çoğu tıp fakültesi asistanları tarafından yazılmıştır (n = 88, %56,77) ve Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi en fazla tezin hazırlandığı üniversitedir (n = 19, %12,26). Akademik bölümler arasında kadavra kullanımı açısından Anatomi bölümü ilk sırada yer aldı (n = 56, %36,13). Kranial veya baş bölgesi en sık incelenen anatomik bölgeydi (n = 44, %28,4). Kadavra ile ilgili tez sayısı 2023 yılında zirveye ulaşırken, 1991-2003 yılları arasında bu konuda hiçbir çalışma yapılmadığı gözlendi. Tezlerin yaklaşık yarısı (%50,3), Uluslararası Anatomistler Dernekleri Federasyonu (IFAA) 2026 tarafından tanımlanan "Cerrahi ve Klinik Anatomi" teması altında yer aldı. Anatomy Connected 2026 kongre konuları dikkate alındığında, tezlerin %11,6'sının "Görüntüleme" kategorisinde olduğu görüldü. Buna karşılık, etik ve hukuk alanındaki tezler %5,8'dir. Sonuç: Bulgular, uluslararası literatür ve kongre başlıklarıyla paralellik göstermektedir. Kadavra diseksiyonunun eğitim, görüntüleme ve cerrahi teknik geliştirmede merkezi bir rol oynamaya devam ettiğini doğrulamaktadır.
