Analysis of Cadaver Theses in Türkiye
Abstract
Aim: To examine postgraduate theses written in Türkiye using the keyword "cadaver."
Methods: A systematic search was carried out in the Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center using the keyword “cadaver”, and a total of 155 theses published between 1989 and 2025 were included in the analysis. All full-text theses obtained were analyzed based on bibliographic data and categorical variables such as study characteristics, thesis type, advisor title, research method and preservation technique.
Results: Most of the theses were written by medical faculty residents (n = 88, 56.77%), and the University of Health Sciences had the highest number of theses (n = 19, 12.26%). Among academic departments, Anatomy ranked first regarding cadaver use (n = 56, 36.13%). The cranial or head region was the most frequently examined anatomical area (n = 44, 28.4%). While the number of theses on cadavers reached its peak in 2023, it was observed that no studies were conducted on this subject between 1991 and 2003. Approximately half of the theses (50.3%) were classified under ‘‘Surgical and Clinical Anatomy’’ theme topic defined by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) 2026. Considering the Anatomy Connected 2026 congress topics, it was seen that 11.6% of the theses were in the ‘‘Imaging’’ category. In contrast, theses in ethics and law are 5.8%.
Conclusion: The findings are parallel to the international literature and congress titles. It confirms that cadaveric dissection continues to play a central role in education, imaging, and surgical technique development.
