The role of movement–melody interaction in the creative processes of contemporary ballet pianists: A descriptive review based on document analysis

Abstract

This study examines the technical and artistic qualifications of ballet pianists, their functions in ballet classes, and their contributions to choreographic processes, while aiming to emphasize the distinctive role they undertake in the creative process. Throughout history, ballet music has evolved from being a merely accompanying element into a central component of performance. In the nineteenth century, ballet music gained symphonic depth through the works of Tchaikovsky, while in the twentieth century it was modernized through the innovative approaches of composers such as Stravinsky. Within the scope of a qualitative research approach, this study employed a descriptive design based on document analysis. In this context, seventeen academic studies related to ballet pianism, the relationship between dance and music, movement–melody interaction, improvisation, embodied performance, the role of the pianist, and interaction within performance were examined. The reviewed sources were comparatively evaluated in terms of methodology, sample, principal findings, and their contributions to the dimensions of movement–melody interaction, embodiment, pianist role, creativity, and interaction. The findings indicate that the role of the ballet pianist is not limited to technical accompaniment skills; rather, it is shaped by improvisation, kinesthetic sensitivity, rhythmic and melodic decision-making, bodily awareness, and instant interaction processes established with dancers. In this respect, the ballet pianist is considered an active creative agent who perceives, interprets, and reconstructs the dancer’s movement through musical parameters. The study demonstrates that ballet pianism should be regarded as an independent and interdisciplinary field of expertise within music education, ballet pedagogy, and performance studies. Ballet pianists are not merely accompanying musicians, but creative artists who provide improvisation, technical competence, and harmony between dance and music. In this context, the study aims to emphasize the importance of ballet pianists in art and music education and to contribute to filling the gap in knowledge in this field.
