The Television Watching Habits of the Parents and Their Influence of Their Children’s Television Watching Behaviors

Abstract

In today's living conditions, "media" constitutes an indispensable area of our lives. Anytime people are not online is now considered a wasted time. With the developing technology in the world in the last fifty years, our lives have been completely covered by the digital environment. The fact that the media has such a place in our lives raises question marks in terms of using it correctly. In this study, it was investigated whether the television watching habits of the parents of the Ankara Province Gölbaşı district TEK Primary School affect their children's television watching behaviors. In order to raise the awareness of Media Literacy in children, it is important for the parents to have a certain level of knowledge about Media Literacy at home, as well as having certain qualifications of educators at school. Within the scope of the study, it was investigated whether different variables had an effect on the media literacy levels of the parents, and it was concluded that mothers and fathers with high media literacy levels were with their children while watching TV. This situation once again reveals the importance of the right media literacy education to be given to parents and sheds light on future studies.

Anne Babaların Televizyon İzleme Alışkanlıkları ve Çocuklarının Televizyon İzleme Davranışlarını Etkileme Durumları / The Television Watching Habits of the Parents and Their Influence of Their Children’s Television Watching Behaviors

Abstract

Günümüz yaşam koşulları içinde “medya” hayatımızın vazgeçilmez bir alanını oluşturmaktadır. Artık insanların çevrimiçi olmadıkları her an kaybedilmiş bir zaman olarak düşünülmektedir. Son elli yılda dünyada gelişen teknoloji ile hayatımız, tamamen dijital ortamın kapsama alanına girmiştir. Medyanın hayatımızda bu kadar yer edinmesi onu doğru kullanma adına da soru işaretlerini doğurmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, görev yaptığım Ankara İli Gölbaşı ilçesi TEK İlkokulu velilerinin televizyon izleme alışkanlıklarının, çocuklarının televizyon izleme davranışlarını etkileme durumları araştırılmıştır. Çocuklara Medya Okuryazarlığı bilincinin kazandırılabilmesi için okulda eğitimcilerin belli yeterlilikte olmasının yanında, evde de ebeveynlerin Medya Okuryazarlığı konusunda belli seviyede bilgi sahibi olması önem taşımaktadır. Çalışmanın kapsamında farklı değişkenlerin anne babaların medya okuryazarlık düzeyleri üzerinde etkisi olup olmadığı araştırılmış, medya okuryazarlık düzeyleri yüksek olan anne ve babaların, çocukları TV izlerken yanlarında bulunduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bu durum ebeveynlere verilecek doğru medya okuryazarlık eğitiminin önemini bir kez daha ortaya koymakta ve bundan sonra yapılacak çalışmalara ışık tutmaktadır.
