Representation of Music in Museums as an Intangible Cultural Heritage Asset: The Case of Ankara Musiki Muallim Mektebi Music Museum

Abstract

The transmission of cultural heritage includes elements of intangible cultural heritage, as well as monuments, and artistic or religious structures. Music is culturally significant as an intangible cultural heritage element, musical instruments are worthy of display as tangible cultural heritage elements accordingly. Museums play a decisive role in the transmission of cultural heritage as institutions serving society through activities that include preservation, display, interpretation, education, and entertainment. The relationship between music and museums is discussed under two main headings: music museums dedicated to conveying a specific period, style, or artist, and the use of sound and music as facilitators within museum exhibitions, regardless of genre. This research investigates what is utilized in the transmission of cultural heritage in music museums. This qualitative research was conducted using document analysis for data collection, and the museum itself was examined as a document. Data analysis was performed using a framework of codes derived directly from the existing literature. The study group is the Ankara Musiki Muallim Mektebi Music Museum. It has been observed that the museum's labeling system does not include any information such as the year of production, material, and region of use of musical instruments; therefore, labels cannot be used effectively to convey the connection between the musical instrument and cultural elements. The museum's sound use does not improve the exhibit, and no musical instrument sounds are provided. Examples about how music museums can facilitate the transmission of cultural heritage by designing activities related to UNESCO's subcategories of intangible cultural heritage elements have been provided.
