Determination of Atmospheric Concentrations of Benzo [a] Pyrene with Active Sampler in Erzurum City Center

Abstract

Fifty one atmospheric air samples were collected from sampling station installed in a point where domestic heating was intensive at the city center of Erzurum from February 5 to April 7 in 2008. The atmospheric gas and particle phase concentration of Benzo [a] Pyrene (BaP) of which carcinogenic effect is more than the other PAH compounds were investigated by using Tecora hi-vol sampling instrument (average 0.320 m3 min-1). The rst 28 days of sampling period were between February 5 - March 15, while the other part, 23 days, were between March 16 - April 7. The average concentration of total (gas+particle) amount of BaP in the period of February- March was measured as 10.25 ± 9.18 ng m3, whereas it was measured as 4.45 ± 1.47 ng m3 in the period of March- April. Furthermore, the values of the daily and monthly concentration of BaP were compared with the literature and it was observed that the present values were close to the values in the regions with the same characteristics.
