Effects of Seed Storage Duration on Seed Yield and Yield Related Characteristics of Common Bean Grown in Different Environments
Abstract
This study was carried out to determine the effects of seed storage at constant temperature of +4°C for 8, 20, 32 and 44 months on seed yield and yield related characteristics in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cvs Karacaşehir-90, Şahin-90 and Yunus-90 under different environmental conditions in Samsun and Sinop provinces, in 2004. Field experiments were setup in 3 different environments showing differences in terms of soil texture, seedbed moisture content and temperature during the seedling emergence. Duration of seedling emergence, optimum owering and pod setting, plant height, rst pod height, pod number per plant showed highly signi cant differences among growing environments. Signi cant differences were found among bean cultivars for optimum owering and pod setting, rst pod height and pod number per plant. It was determined that seed storage duration affected duration of seedling emergence, pod number per plant and seed yield. Seed yield obtained from 44 months storaged seeds was found to be signi cantly lower than that from the other storage durations. It was concluded that common bean seeds may be stored safely at +4°C until 32 months and seeding rate should be increased to compen- sate reducing seedling emergence when seeds 44 months old and over are required to use.
