Agricultural Biomass Potential and Energy Equivalent of Iğdır Province

Abstract

In this study, we evaluated the potential agricultural biomass of Iğdır (which can be available in any
province of Turkey). Grains, vegetables, fruits and fodder crops are grown in the majority of agricultural areas in
the region. The wastes obtained from these products are either evaluated with traditional method (burning) or stood
idle. In this study, our aim was to contribute to the energy production with modern methods in Iğdır Province by
determining annual agricultural biomass potential. For this purpose, the amount of biomass energy that we can
potentially obtain from the herbal products grown in Iğdır province concerning product groups was calculated
annually. The calculations were performed by considering a fve-years (between 2009-2013) data from the crop
production statistics of Turkish Statistical Institute. The amount of the dry biomass and the calorifc value of the
dry biomass obtained from a unit area were 27.5 tons and 4050 kcal kg
-1, respectively. At the end of the study, it is
revealed that the agricultural biomass potential of Turkey’s average was approximately 220 million TOE (ton oil
equivalent) between 2009-2013. The 10% percent of this potential was determined in eastern Anatolia region and
3% of the potential of eastern Anatolia was detected in Iğdır Province. According to the average values of the data
belonged to 2009-2013 years as stated by Turkish Statistical Institute, the average annual value of the available
biomass energy potential of Iğdır Province was determined as 639 thousand TOE, and this value was calculated as
equal to approximately 0.3% of biomass energy potential of Turkey. To convert the determined biomass to energy
with the modern methods is thought to make a signifcant contribution to Turkey’s economy
