Theoretical Approaches in The Determination of Wall Pressures in Storage Structures
Abstract
Storage structures (horizontal and vertical) are usually one of the modern systems stored and
protected of cohesionless materials (grain, coal, ore, etc.). In order to prevent the occurrence of adverse conditions
in storage structures having a complex structure, design pressures should be well calculated. For this purpose,
various mathematical equations have been developed to predict horizontal and vertical pressures in wall of storage
after static, discharge and flling of product. The frst mathematical equation related to design pressures was
developed by Janssen. Based on this equation, the equations considered different design criteria were produced by
different researchers. In this study, Janssen, Reimbert, Forester, Caqout, Airy, Pamelard, Sor, Rankine and ASAE
methods from theoretical approaches used and accepted in the calculation of design pressures in storage structures
were explained. In addition, some sections of Eurocode and Australia standards nowadays widely used in steel silos
using these methods are described in summary
