Determination of Current Condition and Some Production Features of Dairy Processing Facilities in the Region of Kars
Abstract
This study was conducted in order to determine the current condition, production capacities and marketing opportunities of dairy processing facilities in the Province of Kars, as well as their problems about raw milk supply, cold chain, and prices levels and offer solutions. The data used in the study were obtained from 21 dairy processing facilities which were operating in the Organized Industrial Site of Kars, where 40% of milk produced in Kars province is processed, according to the complete inventory method. As a result of the study, it was determined that facilities operated with 11% capacity and processed averagely 18 tons/days of milk; the ultimate purchase price was paid for the milk obtained from the cold chain (0.80 TL Lt-1); majority of facilities (95%) had chrome vehicles for transporting and storing milk, which are important in terms of hygiene; 71% had a packaging unit, 81% had HACCP, ISO and TSE certi cates and no marketing problems. Dairy processing facilities expect producers to increase the hygiene, cold milk production and the number of animals; on the other hand, they expect the government to give support to cold milk production and dairy farming (52.4%), train producers on milk production (28.6%) and struggle with unrecorded production (19.0%) according to order of importance.
