Structural Characteristics of Cattle Enterprises in Hınıs County of Erzurum Province: Farm Management and Calf Rearing Practices

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate farm management and calf raising practices of 378 cattle farms in Hınıs district of Erzurum Province. Data used in this research was obtained as a result of face to face interviewing with cattle breeders and data was analyzed with test of chi-square. 26 % of the cattle breeders in the research area stated that they keep records of animals regularly. It was found out that number of the animal available in the enterprise and educational level of the cattle breeders affected signi cantly (P<0.01) on the habit of keeping records. 17 % of the cattle breeders said that they have received technical assistance about cattle rearing, and 58 % of them provided this knowledge via cattle breeding association. 63 % of the cattle breeders considers bellowing of the cows as primary sign of the heat, and cows in the 48 % of the cattle enterprises are inseminated in the rst heat 3 months after parturition. Colostrum is offered to the new-born calves by suckling their dams (82 %), milk bottles (10 %), buckets (7 %) and nipple buckets (1 %). Additionally, 11 %, 68 %, 21 % of the breeders fed calves with colostrum for 1 day, 2 and 3 days respectively. It was determined that as calves stay with their dams longer than a week in 57 % of the whole cattle farms, they are kept with cows a week (in 24 % of the enterprises) and 3 days (in 19 % of the enterprises).
