This study was conducted to determine the mushroom consumption habits and preferences of people
living in urban area of Igdir province. The material of the study carried out in 2014 constitute the data obtained
from surveys conducted by face to face interview method with a total of 210 people residing in the city center of
Igdir province. As a result of study, it was found that mushroom consumption rate is 68.6% in the city center of
Igdir province. Dislike the taste of mushroom (40.7%) and fear of poisoning (33.3%) constitute greatest reasons
for mushroom nonconsumption. The average monthly consumption of mushroom per family was found to be 1.2
kg and the average monthly consumption of mushroom per person was found to be 324.3 g. A great majority of
individuals consuming mushroom buy the mushrooms from the market (43.6%) and as fresh (93.1%). As the form
of mushroom consumption, consumers generally prefer to eat by making sauteed mushrooms (29%). 72.9% of
individuals consuming mushroom consider that prices of mushrooms are normal. 56.6% of individuals consuming
mushroom eat only cultivated mushroom, 37.2% of individuals consuming mushroom eat both cultivated mushroom
and wild mushroom and 6.2% of individuals consuming mushroom eat only wild mushroom. With regard to
considered points while buying cultivated mushroom, freshness (25.3%) and cleanliness (16.8%) of mushroom
constitute the greatest share. As a result of this research to increase the mushroom consumption in Igdir province,
the consumer awareness about mushrooms should be developed.
