In this study, data recorded in 1981-2008, which belonged to body measurements of purebred Turkish
and Arabian horses raised at Sultansuyu State Farm were used. Heart at withers, heart girth, cannon bone and
body length measurements at different growth stages (birth, 6., 12., 18., 24., 36., 48. mount) compared in respect
of sex and genetic parameters were estimated. Effects of both age and sex were found to be significant (P<0.05) on
all traits. In general, the phenotypic correlation coefficients between the investigated traits were found significantly
(P<0.05), excluding correlations between birth weight and other trait.
The highest and lowest heritability and repeatability estimates for these traits were found to be 0.07-0.87 and
0.16-0.87 respectively and interpreted as moderate-high. The lowest value of heritability was determined for heart
girth in birth (0.07) and, the highest heritability value for cannon bone in 6th month (0.87). The lowest value of
repeatability was determined for heart girth in 6th month and cannon bone in 12th month (0.16), and, the highest
repeatability value for body length in 6th month (0.87). The fact that the degree of heritability of other features is
moderate-high indicates that the mass selection can be successful in terms of other features.
