Sustainable transportation in selected tourism destinations within the scope of urban mobility: A multidimensional scaling analysis

Abstract

Abstract: The accelerating processes of global population growth and urbanization have led to increased use of transportation systems. This intensifies urban mobility and poses various environmental sustainability challenges. In this context, sustainable urban mobility has become increasingly significant. It enhances the quality of urban life, reduces carbon emissions, improves the efficiency of transportation systems, transforms cities into smart destinations, and strengthens their positions within tourism destinations. This study aims to analyze sustainable transportation data from 26 cities included in the Sustainable Mobility Readiness Index. These cities are among the top 50 most visited cities worldwide. The study uses a multidimensional approach to identify similarities and differences among these cities and to examine the relationship between these patterns and tourism mobility. Accordingly, six key dimensions are considered: transport supply, transport demand, innovation, policies, finance, and environment and energy. The study uses data from 2024 and 2025 for the selected 26 cities. It employs Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) and hierarchical clustering methods in the analysis. The findings reveal that the sustainable mobility performance of the cities does not exhibit a homogeneous structure and can be grouped into three main clusters. The environment, energy, and finance dimensions create the most pronounced differentiation among cities, whereas the policies dimension shows greater heterogeneity. Furthermore, the results indicate that developed cities with high levels of tourist mobility generally exhibit higher sustainable mobility performance. Cities such as London, Helsinki, Amsterdam, and Singapore demonstrate strong performance in transportation infrastructure and innovation capacity. In contrast, developing cities such as Lagos, Cape Town, and Bogotá have relatively limited sustainable transportation infrastructure and financial resources. This is considered to contribute to lower performance levels. The evaluations suggest that strengthening transportation infrastructure, promoting the adoption of electric vehicle technologies, advancing intelligent transportation systems, and implementing environmentally friendly transport policies are crucial for enhancing sustainable urban mobility.
