Middle School Students' Metaphorical of the Concepts of Science Educational and Science

Abstract

This study was conducted to reveal the perceptions of middle school students towards the concepts of “Science Education ” and “Science” through metaphors. The study was conducted according to the phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research designs. The research data were collected from a total of 92 middle school students, consisting of 53 girls and 39 boys, who are studying in Düzce during the 2023-2024 academic year. Obtaining the data “Science Education is like ................ Because ....................” and ”Science is like ................ Because ....................” were completed by middle school students. According to the findings, middle school students produced 74 valid metaphors for the concept of “Science Education ” and 69 valid metaphors for the concept of “science”. When the metaphors created by middle school students were categorized according to their similarities, 5 categories were obtained for “Science Education ” and 5 categories for “science. The categories for “Science Education ” were “Comprehensively Understood Science Education”, “Complexly Understood Science Education”, “Helpfully Understood Science Education”, “Gradually Understood Science Education” and “Not Outwardly Seen Science Education”. The categories for “Science” are “Science as Instructive - Helpful - Informative”, “Science as Exploratory - Investigative”, “Science as Containing In-depth Information”, “Science as Complex Structure” and “Science as an Absolute Necessity. The most frequently recurring metaphor in the “Science education” category was “book”, while the most frequently recurring metaphor in the “Science” category was “teacher”. While “Science education” was mostly interpreted as comprehensive, “Science” was interpreted as instructive - helpful - informative. The results obtained are consistent with previous studies.
