Research Trends in Artificial Intelligence in Mathematics Education: A Descriptive Review of Graduate Theses and International Articles

Abstract

This study aims to examine postgraduate theses focusing on the applications of artificial intelligence in mathematics education in Turkey within a thematic framework. The research adopted the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research approaches, and the data were obtained from the Council of Higher Education Thesis Center. A total of 19 theses published between 2000 and June 2025, deemed relevant to the research purpose, were analyzed. The theses were classified based on criteria such as publication year, type, method, sample groups, and keywords, and were examined through content analysis. The findings indicate a remarkable increase, especially after 2023. The majority of the works consist of master’s theses (f=16), while doctoral-level studies remain limited. In terms of methodology, quantitative research (f=10) is predominant, followed by qualitative studies (f=7), whereas mixed-method research (f=2) has been used only to a small extent. Regarding sample groups, teachers and middle school students were the most frequently studied participants, while research involving university and high school students was relatively scarce. Keyword analysis revealed that “artificial intelligence” stands out as the central concept, accompanied by contemporary terms such as “mathematics education,” “ChatGPT,” “distance education,” and “machine learning.” Overall, the results show that academic interest in artificial intelligence in mathematics education in Turkey has been steadily increasing, although the studies remain concentrated on specific methods and participant groups. This highlights the need for future research that expands diversity and incorporates interdisciplinary perspectives.
