Do childhood measles and DTaP vaccination decrease the mortality rate caused by SARS CoV-2 in OECD countries?

Abstract

Aim: It is aimed to examine the relationship between DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) and measles vaccination rates of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries and case fatality rate (CFR) caused by SARS CoV-2 with this study. Materials and Methods: Considering the fact that COVID-19 pandemic was mainly observed in the northern hemisphere and the seasonal effect, OECD countries located in northern hemisphere were involved in this study. 2018 OECD data has been used for vaccination rates of the countries where “Our World in Data” website (https://ourworldindata.org/) has been used for CFR and other data. Therefore, ethics committee approval was not obtained for this study. CFR has been calculated according to the total mortality count of OECD countries for the 3-month period down from the date when first SARS CoV-2 case was observed. Results: Based on the correlation levels of vaccination rates of OECD countries with 3-month CFR, it has been observed that there is negative although not yet significant correlation (r=-264.0, p=0.145) between CFR and DTaP vaccination rates and there is negative correlation at a high level of significance between CFR and measles (r=-0.479, p=0.006). Discussion: It has been concluded that CFR rates based on SARS CoV-2 are lower in the countries that apply measles vaccine, which is live-attenuated vaccine, on the society in a stricter way. States must spread vaccination across the society by applying stricter vaccination programmes.
