Arkeolojik Buluntudan Turistik Öyküye: Side’deki Sifouni Örneği

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Side Müzesi envanterinde yer alan 3078 numaralı atipik kap formunu disiplinler arası bir yaklaşımla inceleyerek, söz konusu nesnenin morfolojik özellikleri ile kültürel ve işlevsel anlam katmanlarını birlikte değerlendirmektedir. Araştırmada karşılaştırmalı morfolojik analiz ve etno-arkeolojik analoji yöntemleri kullanılarak formun Erken Bizans dönemine uzanan antik “wine-thief” geleneğinin Orta Çağ’daki bir devamı ve dönüşümü olduğu ortaya konmuştur. Ayrıca Anadolu’da Side, Hierapolis ve Stratonikeia gibi yerleşimlerde sınırlı sayıda tespit edilen bu örneklerin, günümüzde Nakşa Adası’nda üretimi sürdürülen “sifouni” adlı etnografik sifon kaplarla tipolojik, işlevsel ve kültürel bakımdan yakın bir ilişki taşıdığı belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın en önemli sonucu, bu kap formunun yalnızca arkeolojik bir buluntu olarak değil, aynı zamanda toplumsal hafıza, kültürel süreklilik ve nüfus mübadelesi sonrası yaşanan kopuşları görünür kılan bir anlatı aracı olarak da değerlendirilebileceğini göstermesidir. Bu yönüyle araştırma, nesne odaklı yaklaşımın kültür turizmi, müzecilik ve profesyonel turist rehberliği açısından güçlü bir yorumlama ve öykü anlatıcılığı zemini sunduğunu vurgulamaktadır. Çalışmanın temel sınırlılığı, arkeometrik analizlerin yokluğundan çok, bu kap formuna ait yeterli sayıda örneğin henüz tespit edilememiş veya doğru biçimde tanımlanamamış olmasıdır. Buna bağlı olarak, gelecekte yeni örneklerin belgelenmesi ve mevcut koleksiyonların yeniden değerlendirilmesi, formun tarihsel yayılımını ve kültürel biyografisini daha kapsamlı biçimde açıklamaya katkı sağlayacaktır.

From Archaeological Discovery to Tourist Story: The Sifouni Example in Side

Abstract

This study examines the atypical ceramic vessel numbered 3078 in the Side Museum inventory through an interdisciplinary perspective, evaluating both its morphological characteristics and its cultural and functional meanings. By employing comparative morphological analysis and ethno-archaeological analogy, the research demonstrates that this form represents a medieval continuation and transformation of the ancient “wine-thief” tradition dating back to the Early Byzantine period. It further reveals that the rare examples identified in Anatolian settlements such as Side, Hierapolis, and Stratonikeia share a close typological, functional, and cultural relationship with the ethnographic siphon vessels known as “sifouni,” which are still produced on Naxos Island today. The principal conclusion of the study is that this vessel form should be understood not only as an archaeological artifact but also as a narrative medium that makes visible social memory, cultural continuity, and the ruptures that emerged after the population exchange. In this respect, the study emphasizes that an object-oriented approach provides a strong interpretive and storytelling framework for cultural tourism, museology, and professional tourist guiding. The main limitation of the research lies not primarily in the absence of archaeometric analyses, but rather in the insufficient number of identified or correctly classified examples of this vessel form. Therefore, the documentation of new examples and the re-evaluation of existing collections in future research will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of their historical distribution and cultural biography.
