ANTICLASTOGENIC POTENTIAL OF Thlaspi perfoliatum WITH MCF-7 CELLS AND Allium TEST

Abstract

In this study, the cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects of Thlaspi perfoliatum methanol extract on human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and its genotoxic and mitotic repair effects on Allium cepa root cells against toxic substance (CuSO₄) were evaluated in detail. MTT assay results revealed that the extract significantly reduced the viability of MCF-7 cells and inhibited cell proliferation, particularly at medium and high concentrations (400–1000 ppm). The LD₅₀ value ranging between 400–600 ppm indicates that the extract has a strong antiproliferative effect on cancer cells. On the other hand, analyses conducted on the A. cepa model revealed that the CuSO₄-induced decrease in the mitotic index recovered significantly at low and medium doses, while chromosomal abnormalities decreased depending on the dose and application time. These findings demonstrate that T. perfoliatum exhibits anticancer effects and supports cellular repair processes by protecting genetic material thanks to its bioactive components. In this context, T. perfoliatum methanol extract has the potential to be evaluated as a natural therapeutic agent in the future and contributes to supporting its traditional uses with scientific foundations
