Abstract
Forms of communication of environmental issues have an important role in creating environmental awareness. In this study, the news about thermal power plants that cause serious problems on the environment and human life was examined in the context of environmental journalism. In this direction, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet and Sabah newspapers were selected as examples. The news published between 25.11.2020 and 28.02.2021 was analyzed on the internet pages of these newspapers. It is aimed to reveal how news about thermal power plants is presented, how reality is produced through news and the forms of discourse that become evident in this direction. In this study, the news was examined within the framework of critical discourse analysis. Considering the data of the study, it can be said that Cumhuriyet has an understanding of environmental journalism related to thermal power plants and that its political and ideological attitude is reflected in environmental journalism as well as its observance of environmental rights. In Hürriyet and Sabah, a discourse has been developed that thermal power plants contribute to the country’s economy and the determinants of economic and political elements are reflected in the production process of environmental news.
