Abstract

Abstract

The application of olive mill wastewater (OMW) to soil presents challenges due to its high organic load, high salt, phenol, and polyphenol content. In this study, different doses of raw OMW (H), OMW sludge (G), and Ca(OH)₂-treated OMW (K) (H5, H10, H15 m³/da; G1, G2, G3 t/da; K5, K10, K15 m³/da), along with mineral fertilizer and control treatments were set up in a randomized block design with five treatments and three replications at the International Agricultural Research and Training Center (UTAEM) in İzmir Menemen. The experiment aimed to examine the effects of these applications on some physical and chemical properties of soil and the level of pollution that they caused. Soil samples were taken from a depth of 0-20 cm from each plot to determine the physical and chemical properties of soil and total phenol content at three time points which were 3 months (1st period), 5 months (2nd period), and 16 months (3rd period) after the application of raw OMW, treated OMW, and OMW sludge. İn accordance with findings, after applying OMW sludge, raw OMW, and treated OMW,the soil pH was not affected the pH rating, and the soils remained within the moderately alkaline class (7.83-8.07). soil electrical conductivity (EC) values (0.423–1.117 dS m⁻¹) were found statistcly signifacent following the applications, although all soils were classified as non-saline. The organic matter content of soils increased significantly from 1.2% to 1.9% through the OMW sludge application. The effects of OMW sludge application rates on field capacity and hydraulic conductivity were also statistically significant. Soil structure stability index (SSI) showed a statistically significant increase with OMW sludge and raw OMW applications. Additionally, the increase in total phenol content in the soil following OMW sludge, raw OMW, and treated OMW applications was found statistically significant.
