Parametric Design and Sustainability: A Bibliometric Analysis of Emerging Trends and Methodological Convergence (2009–2025)

Abstract

Over the past decade, parametric design has evolved from a digital modeling technique into a comprehensive methodological framework that integrates sustainability principles within architectural research and practice. This study investigates how contemporary scholarship connects parametric design with sustainability, aiming to identify major research trends, thematic focuses, and global collaboration networks. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database, covering publications between 2009 and October 2025 that include the keywords “parametric design” AND “sustainability.” The analysis reveals a notable growth in publications after 2019, indicating the increasing relevance of computational and performance-based approaches in sustainable architecture. Research is predominantly concentrated in China, Italy, Spain, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with collaboration patterns reflecting a strong international network. Keyword mapping highlights four thematic clusters—optimization, BIM integration, material efficiency, and life cycle assessment (LCA)—demonstrating the methodological convergence between computational logic and environmental performance. Overall, findings suggest that parametric design is no longer limited to formal experimentation but serves as an operational system for achieving sustainability-driven outcomes. However, the current literature remains largely performance-oriented, underrepresenting social and cultural dimensions of sustainability. The study contributes to a holistic understanding of how parametric methods mediate between digital innovation and ecological responsibility, outlining key directions for future interdisciplinary research in architecture.
