Abstract

STEM education means to teach science, mathematics, engineering and technology through an interdisciplinary method. The interest for STEM education is rising rapidly in our shools and in informal centers. Students with STEM education are crucial for the future of the country, its development and economic growth.  Faculties of Education train the K12 teachers. For this reason, it is important for educational faculties to provide their students with training STEM field by combining theory and practice in laboratory environment, to open STEM education courses at undegraduate level, and to open graduate STEM education programs. In this study, examples of STEM education studies from Turkish teacher education programs and international STEM education studies were reviewed. With this review, it is aimed to make proposals for teacher education programs to train a generation in compliance with 21st century skill. Connected with this aim, the STEM education status of all teacher education programs in Turkey, thesis and dissertation studies, training programs, national and international funded projects, STEM activities and reports were examined. Finally, two categorical questions and one open ended question were sent to the deans of 92 education faculties in Turkey to examine STEM studies from these faculties. Responses from 61 education faculties were analyzed. According to results, the level of STEM education awareness was high across faculty members, but at the same time the preperation and application of STEM education were not enough. Because important breakthrough should be needed in STEM education field, vital precautions was proposed.
