Examining the Relationship Between Physical Activity Attitudes and Gaming Addiction Among Individuals Aged 12-14

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between physical ac-tivity and digital game addiction among individuals aged 12-14. A correlational sur-vey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. A total of 254 individuals (133 males, 121 females) residing in the Şahinbey district of Gaziantep province voluntarily participated in the study. In addition to the personal information form, the ‘Physical Activity Attitude Scale for Children and Youth’ and the ‘Digital Game Addiction Scale’ were used as data collection tools. The SPSS 22.0 software pac-kage was used for data analysis. The data showed a normal distribution, and therefore parametric tests were applied. Based on the results obtained from the digital game ad-diction scale, it was found that males had higher levels of digital game addiction than females, while no significant differences were found in terms of age, parental educa-tion level, and licensed athlete status. Based on the results obtained from the physical activity attitude scale in children and adolescents, no significant differences were fo-und in terms of gender and parental education level, while significant results were fo-und in favor of licensed athletes. Furthermore, it was found that the level of negative attitudes towards physical activity was higher in the 13-year-old age group. Correla-tional analysis results revealed a low-level, positive, and significant relationship between digital game addiction and negative attitudes towards physical activity. Consequently, it can be stated that individuals exhibiting negative attitudes towards physical activity have increased levels of digital game addiction.
