N. V. Gogol'ün "Ölü Canlar" Poemasında Yol Kronotopu

Abstract

19. yüzyıl Rus edebiyatının ve eleştirel gerçekçiliğin en önde gelen temsilcilerinden olan Nikolay Vasilyeviç Gogol (1809-1852); trajik, gülünç, fantastik, grotesk tüm unsurları hiciv sanatıyla birleştirerek muazzam öyküler ve tiyatro yapıtları kaleme almıştır. Bir hiciv ustası olarak; devlet kurumları, bürokratları, toprak beyleri, serfleri ve tüm sınıftan insanlarıyla I.Nikolay dönemi Rusya’sını ağır bir eleştiriye tâbi tutmuş; yapıtlarıyla Rus halkını kendi gerçekliğiyle yüzleştirmek, ona yol göstermek ve onu bu yozlaşmışlıktan kurtarmak istemiştir. Bu bağlamda, konusunu Aleksandr Sergeyeviç Puşkin’in verdiği, gerçekte yaşanmış bir dolandırıcılık hikâyesine dayanan ve Gogol’ün poema olarak adlandırdığı, 1842 yılında yayımlanan Ölü Canlar romanı, Gogol’ün Rusya ile birlikte, ona karşı görevini yerine getirerek, âdeta kendi ruhunu da kurtarmak istediği bir yapıt olarak sanatının zirvesini oluşturmuştur. İlk yayımlandığında “Çiçikov’un Maceraları, ya da Ölü Canlar” başlığıyla okura sunulan roman, büyük oranda pikaresk özellikler taşımaktadır. Başkahraman Pavel İvanoviç Çiçikov romanın başından sonuna kadar yolda görülür; tüm olaylar, Çiçikov’un Rusya’da yaptığı yolculuklarla birbirine eklemlenerek romanın bütününü oluşturur. Rus edebiyat teorisyeni Mihail Bahtin’in zaman-uzam birlikteliği olarak edebiyat teorisine kazandırdığı kronotop kavramıyla ve bu bağlamda yol kronotopu temelinde yapıtın incelenmesinin sebebi; bu kronotopun zaman-uzam birlikteliğiyle, romanın türünden olay örgüsü oluşturmaya, roman karakterlerinin analizinden, yapıtın değerler bütünüyle okura vermek istediği mesaja kadar romanın temel bileşenleriyle analiz edilmesine olanak tanıması ve bu bağlamda yol kronotopu’nun yapıttaki önemini ortaya koymaktır. Çiçikov romanda farklı toprak sahiplerine yaptığı yolculuklarla yoldadır; ancak yazar, kahramanının metaforik olarak doğru yolu bulup bulamayacağı sorusuyla da okuru yüzleştirir. Yol artık sadece Çiçikov’un değildir; tüm Rusya’nın yoluna, yazarın da yaşam yoluna dönüşmüştür.

The Road Chronotope in the Poem “Dead Souls” by N. V. Gogol

Abstract

Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852), one of the most prominent representatives of 19th-century Russian literature and critical realism, wrote striking stories and plays by combining all tragic, ridiculous, fantastic, and grotesque elements with the art of satire. As a master of satire, he subjected Russia during the reign of Nicholas I, with its state institutions, bureaucrats, landlords, serfs, and people of all classes, to heavy criticism. Through his works, he wanted to question the Russian people’s view of their reality, guide them, and save them from corruption. In this context, the novel Dead Souls, which Gogol calls a poem, published in 1842 and based on a real-life fraud story by Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin, constitutes the peak of Gogol’s art, in which he wanted to fulfil his duty towards Russia and save his own soul along with Russia. The novel, presented to the reader with the title “The Adventures of Chichikov, or Dead Souls” when it was first published, has largely picaresque features. The protagonist, Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, is seen on the road from the beginning to the end of the novel. All events are articulated with Chichikov's travels in Russia and form the whole story. The work is examined on the basis of the concept of chronotope, which Russian literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin introduced to literary theory as the unity of time-space. In this context, it is aimed to reveal the importance of the road chronotope in the novel, with the time-space unity allowing us to analyse the story with its basic components, from the genre of the novel to creating a plot and from the analysis of the characters of the novel to the values of the story and the message it wants to give to the reader. In the novel, Chichikov is on the road with his journeys to different landowners. However, the author also questions whether his hero can metaphorically find the right path. The road is no longer just Chichikov’s; it has become the path of all of Russia and the writer’s life.
