A Review On Italian And Turkish Zoometaphors Used To Characterize Humans
Abstract
Zoometaphors include observations of the appearance and behavior of animals for centuries in various nations and are therefore considered as a source of information on the culture of the land. It turns out that these imaginary units, which characterize the human being, function as impressive synonyms of the existing nomenclature on the ground. These metaphors are used to name the person, and also show the attitude of the speaker, the evaluation he has done, and his feelings. Metaphores containing animal names are used to make narrative effective, or to express emotions and thoughts in a short way, with emotional, narrative, and valorisation elements. Metaphor definitions, classifications, properties and functions of metaphores containing animal names are explained, and the methods used in the study are mentioned as document browsing and comparison. The metaphors in the resulting database of the Italian and Turkish descriptive dictionaries have been examined comparatively in terms of their use as output sources and areas they are used in; qualifications in terms of negative, positive and neutral characteristics; the relations between groups and individuals; and their uses as sex-based, exclamation, appeals and abusive words. It is thought that the results obtained from the examination will contribute to the teaching of Turkic and Italian as a foreign language and to the translation and intercultural studies among these languages.
