The Place and Importance of India under British Rule in the Nineteenth Century
Abstract
Having a very large population in a wide geographical area, India attracted the attention of the Eastern and Western countries with its crucial geographical position and material wealth. Indeed, in particular, important imperial powers such as France and Britain and Russia, struggled to dominate the region and have assumed that possessing India is important in terms of reputation as well as financial gains. So much so that in the 19th century the idea of having India in the Turkestan khanates became an exceptional mechanism of control over the world. France has been one of the major forces in the struggle to dominate India. After France's endeavor to dominate India was ended with seven-year wars and the French were completely removed from India, Britain became Russia's most important rival in the region. In this direction, Russia has developed new strategies for Iran and Afghanistan in order to have India, while Britain has shaped its relations with these countries in line with its interests in India. Britain began to gain influence in India with the company it founded in the early 17th century. Over time, India has become a major market for British products as well as a source of raw materials, and it has become a priority in British politics in the 19th century. In this period, Russia's progress in the direction of Turkestan, its relations with France and the Ottoman state, and its military and political activities in Iran and Afghanistan put the British colonies in India at risk. As a result, there has been a long diplomatic rivalry between the two states. In our study, were discussed from the 17th century onwards, the process of gaining importance from the point of view of England in India and the situation in the region of England in the nineteenth century.
