Ottoman Teachers’ Training School for Boys: The Teachers’ Training School for Boys of Maraş

Abstract

Efforts of the Ottomans to develop modern education were increased in the 19th century and these efforts were intensified in the Tanzimat Era. For this aim many new and modern schools were opened. One of the most important problems of these new schools was finding teachers to teach courses. In order to solve this problem, the Ottomans opened a Teachers’ Training School for Boys in 1848, and a Teachers’ Training School for Girls in 1870. The firsts of these schools were opened in İstanbul, and in time they were expanded in other cities of the Empire. In late Ottoman end, one of the Teachers’ Training School for Boys was established in Maraş in 1915. The student’s register book that contains registers from 1915-to 1922 was reached to write this paper.

This work focuses in general on Ottoman Teachers’ Training School for Boys and their state in country and in particular the Teachers’ Training School for Boys of Maraş.  How these schools were run, how they treated students, and what types of courses were taught in this school have been in the focus of this study. Main source of this study is student registration records of the schools that provide such information as student profiles, courses, duration of education.
