On the Use and Familiarity of Copular Clauses in English and Turkish

Abstract

Copula "be" is an essential element of English language as it stands for a bridge between the subject and its predicates. In spite of its being at lexical level in English, it is also seen as an affix in some other languages. When the issue is Turkish language, it used to appear at lexical level in early Turkish use, but is an inflectional morpheme in contemporary forms. Both English and Turkish bear some similar semantic usages of copula "be" in different clause types. This current study is to analyze the copular clauses that appear in English and compare them with those in Turkish. A further empirical data also aims to investigate the familiarity of the native speakers of Turkish in terms of the copular clauses in their mother tongue.
