Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada’s Perception of Islam and His Activities towards Muslims

Abstract

The Iberian Peninsula, where the first Christian views on Islam emerged in Medieval Europe, has a special place in the history of Islamic-Western relations as a geography where Muslim-Christian contacts were intensely experienced for about nine centuries. From the 8th century onward, when Muslims conquered al-Andalus, scholars such as Alvaro de Cordoba, Petrus Alfonsi and Petrus Venerabilis adopted an antagonistic and pejorative discourse towards Islam, which was often far from reality. By the 12th century, with the translation of the Qur’an and a number of Islamic works into Latin, works containing more detailed and authentic information about Islam and Muslims were produced in the Christian West. In the 13th century, one of the most important figures who lived in the region and provided information about Islam and Muslims in his works was Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, one of the leading historians of medieval Spain. This article aims to determine the perception of Islam and Muslims in the mind of Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada based on his works and intellectual activities. Within the scope of the study, it will be revealed what kind of contributions the information he gave about Islamic history in his works made to the development of the literature on the history and culture of Muslims as well as the perception of Islam in the Western world. In addition, during the intense struggle between Muslims and Christians in the Iberian Peninsula, his political and religious activities to organize a Crusade against Muslims and the process of translating the Qur’an, the holy book of Muslims, into Latin will also be determined.

Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada’nın İslâm Algısı ve Müslümanlara Yönelik Faaliyetleri

Abstract

Ortaçağ Avrupası’nda İslâm hakkındaki ilk Hristiyan görüşlerinin ortaya çıktığı İber Yarımadası, yaklaşık dokuz asır boyunca Müslüman-Hristiyan temaslarının yoğun yaşandığı bir coğrafya olarak İslâm-Batı ilişkileri tarihinde özel bir yere sahiptir. Müslümanların Endülüs’ü fethettiği VIII. asırdan itibaren Kurtubalı Alvarus, Petrus Alfonsi ve Muhterem Peter gibi âlimlerin İslâm dinine yönelik benimsedikleri karşıt ve pejoratif söylem ekseriyetle gerçeklikten uzaktı. XII. asra gelindiğinde Kur’an-ı Kerim ve bir dizi İslâmî eserin Latince’ye tercüme edilmesiyle Hristiyan Batı’da İslâm dini ve Müslümanlara dair daha tafsilatlı ve sahih bilgileri ihtiva eden eserler üretildi. XIII. asırda bölgede yaşayıp eserlerinde İslâm ve Müslümanlar hakkında bilgi sunan en önemli figürlerden birisi Ortaçağ İspanyası’nın öncü tarihçilerinden Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada (ö. 1247) idi. Bu makale, Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada’nın zihin dünyasındaki İslâm dini ve Müslüman algısını onun eserlerine ve entelektüel faaliyetlerine dayalı olarak tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Onun eserlerinde İslâm tarihi hakkında verdiği bilgilerin Batı dünyasında İslâm algısının yanı sıra Müslümanların tarihi ve kültürüne dair literatürün gelişmesine ne gibi katkıları olduğu da çalışma kapsamında ortaya konulacaktır. Ayrıca İber Yarımadası’nda Müslümanlar ile Hristiyanlar arasında devam eden yoğun mücadele sürecinde onun Müslümanlara yönelik bir Haçlı seferi organize etmek üzere gerçekleştirdiği siyasi ve dini faaliyetler ve Müslümanların kutsal kitabı olan Kur’an-ı Kerim’i Latince’ye tercüme ettirme süreci de tespit edilecektir.
