A Landscape-Based Model Proposal for Sustainable Cultural Heritage Tourism on the Bozburun Peninsula

Abstract

This study examines the sustainable cultural heritage tourism potential of the Bozburun Peninsula through a landscape-based perspective. Although the peninsula contains a multilayered rural heritage composed of agricultural terraces, traditional stone houses, water-management systems, coastal chapels, ancient settlements, and abandoned villages, its tourism identity has largely been shaped by maritime and coastal attractions. The article argues that these heritage elements should not be treated as isolated remains, but as interconnected components of a cultural landscape shaped by settlement, production, belief, and environmental adaptation. Drawing on UNESCO Cultural Landscapes, ICOMOS Cultural Routes, field observations, and comparative Mediterranean cases, the study proposes the Low-Impact Living Heritage Zone (LILHZ) model as a conservation-oriented framework for fragile rural landscapes. The model emphasizes controlled access, adaptive reuse, carrying-capacity awareness, local participation, craft transmission, and route-based interpretation. Ultimately, the study positions the Bozburun Peninsula as a potential reference for responsible rural heritage tourism and landscape-based destination planning in the Mediterranean.
