Prohibition, Sin and Punishment: Mythological Boundaries of Women’s Freedom in Eve, Lilith and Pandora

Abstract

This article examines how women’s freedom is mythologically restricted through the narratives of Eve, Lilith and Pandora. Rather than gathering these figures under a single category of the “guilty woman”, the article analyzes them as narrative forms of different patriarchal anxieties directed at women’s freedom. The study is designed as a theoretical inquiry grounded in feminist myth criticism, sociology of gender, debates on symbolic power and contemporary feminist literature on myth revision. Within this framework, Eve is interpreted as the woman who turns toward knowledge, Lilith as the woman who demands equality and refuses obedience, and Pandora as the woman who questions prohibition and exposes what has been kept hidden. The findings suggest that mythological narratives do more than place women in a secondary position. They legitimize the gender order by associating women’s subjectivation with sin, demonization and catastrophe. The article concludes that the problem is not women’s freedom itself, but the patriarchal symbolic order that continues to narrate women’s freedom as a disruptive and dangerous possibility.

Yasak, Günah ve Ceza: Havva, Lilith ve Pandora’da Kadın Özgürlüğünün Mitolojik Sınırları

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Havva, Lilith ve Pandora anlatıları üzerinden kadın özgürlüğünün mitolojik düzeyde nasıl sınırlandırıldığını incelemektedir. Makalenin temel amacı, bu üç figürü aynı “suçlu kadın” kategorisi içinde toplamak yerine, kadın özgürlüğünün farklı biçimlerine yönelen patriyarkal korkuların anlatısal görünümleri olarak çözümlemektir. Çalışma, feminist mit eleştirisi, toplumsal cinsiyet sosyolojisi, sembolik iktidar tartışmaları ve güncel feminist yeniden yazım literatürüne dayanan kuramsal bir inceleme olarak tasarlanmıştır. Bu çerçevede Havva bilgiye yönelen kadın figürü, Lilith eşitlik talep eden ve itaat etmeyen kadın figürü, Pandora ise yasağın ardını merak eden ve saklı olanı açığa çıkaran kadın figürü olarak ele alınmıştır. Metin, mitolojik anlatıların geçmişe ait kültürel kalıntılarla sınırlı kalmadığını, modern kadınlık rejimlerinde ahlak, aile, namus, itaat, makbul kadınlık ve ifşa karşıtı söylemler aracılığıyla yeniden üretilebildiğini tartışmaktadır. Bulgular, mitolojik anlatıların kadını ikincil konuma yerleştirmenin ötesine geçtiğini, kadın özneleşmesini günah, şeytanilik ve felaket kodlarıyla ilişkilendirerek toplumsal cinsiyet düzenini meşrulaştırdığını göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, kadın özgürlüğünün değil, kadın özgürlüğünü düzen bozucu ve tehlikeli bir ihtimal gibi anlatan patriyarkal sembolik düzenin sorgulanması gerektiğini savunmaktadır.
