GOTİK YANKILAR: İNGİLİZ VE ALMAN EDEBİYATINDA GOTİK ETKİLERİN KEŞFİ

Abstract

Adını Cermen kökenli bir Kuzey Avrupa kavmi olan Gotlara borçlu olan gotik, XII. yüzyıldan günümüze dek çeşitli siyasi, toplumsal ve estetik yaklaşımları adlandırmakta kullanılmıştır. Olumludan olumsuza sürekli anlam boyutları arasında yol alan gotik, tarihsel gelişimi boyunca, mimariden edebiyata, yazı stilinden hayat tarzına dek pek çok alanı etkilemiştir. Edebiyattaki etkisi ise açık bir şekilde Aydınlanma döneminde görülmektedir. Gotik roman, İngiliz edebiyatına özgü bir tür olarak görülmektedir ve Horace Walpole’un 1764 tarihli The Castle of Otranto adlı romanıyla tarih sahnesine çıkmıştır. Okurlarda korku ve dehşet yaratan gotik metinler, cinsellik, erotizm ve her türden şiddet sahneleriyle kısa sürede sadece İngiltere’de değil, Almanya’da da hızla yayılmıştır. Gotik roman, Alman edebiyatında korku yönü ön plana çıkartılarak Schauerroman olarak adlandırılmıştır. Ancak gotik romanın Alman edebiyatındaki karşılığı, Orta Çağ’daki hikâyeleri konu edinen eserleri de kapsayacak şekilde genişletilerek Ritter-, Räuber- und Schauerromantik olarak da adlandırılabilmektedir. Bu makalenin amacı, İngiliz ve Alman edebiyatlarında gotik türün erken döneminde ortaya çıkan etkileşimleri ele almaktır. Bu amaçla, çalışmada gotiğin kavramsal tarihinden bahsedildikten sonra Alman ve İngiliz edebiyatında gotik türün yeri hakkında bilgi verilecek ve bu iki edebiyat arasında var olan etkileşim somut eserler üzerinden açıklanacaktır.

GOTHIC REVERBERATIONS: AN EXPLORATION OF GOTHIC INFLUENCES IN ENGLISH AND GERMAN LITERATURES

Abstract

Gothic, which owes its name to the Goths, a Northern European tribe of Germanic origin, has been used from the 12th century onwards to name various political, social, and aesthetic approaches. Throughout its historical development, the gothic, which constantly moves between dimensions of meaning from positive to negative, has influenced many fields, from architecture to literature, from writing style to lifestyle. Gothic influence in literature can be clearly seen during the Enlightenment period. The Gothic novel is seen as a genre unique to English literature and made its debut with Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto dated 1764 novel. With all their themes of sexuality, eroticism, and all kinds of violence, and fear and horror inducing scenes, gothic texts spread rapidly not only in England but also in Germany. Emphasizing its horror aspect, the gothic novel is called Schauerroman in German literature. Extending to contain works based on stories from the Middle Ages, the equivalent of the gothic novel in German literature can also be called Ritter-, Räuber- und Schauerromantik. The aim of this article is to examine the interactions in the early period of gothic literature in English and German literatures. To this end, this study offers insights on the place of Gothic genre in both German and English literary traditions after discussing the conceptual history of the Gothic through the consideration of particular works, the study also clarifies the relationship between these two literary traditions.
