New Inscriptions from North-Western Galatia

Abstract

This article presents six Greek inscriptions housed in the excavation depot of the ancient city of Pessinous. Five of these inscriptions were brought to the depot from the surrounding area, and based on their findspots, four of them should belong to the territory of Colonia Germa rather than Pessinous, while one appears to come from the territory of Germia. The findspot of one inscription kept in the garden of the excavation house is unknown. One of the inscriptions is votive in genre, dedicated to Zeus Orochoreites. Four of the artifacts are funerary inscriptions. The last inscription, which is dated to the Early Christian Period, functions as an addendum and concerns the vow of Andronikos and an individual whose name begins with Dio-. Two of the inscriptions provide a date, which, based on their findspots, should be understood according to the Galatian Era. The remaining inscriptions generally belong to the Roman Imperial Period, with letter forms indicating the 2nd–3rd centuries A.D.
