Staging Execution: New Iconographic Evidence for Damnatio ad Bestias at Perge

Abstract

The two Late Antique figural terracotta vessel lid fragments from Perge depicting damnatio ad bestias constitute particularly significant evidence, given the rarity of securely identified representations of this form of execution. Although recovered from different archaeological contexts, the two fragments preserve complementary elements of the same iconographic programme. The Stadium-Amphitheatre example depicts a condemned prisoner on a raised platform approached by a lion and accompanied by a whip-bearing bestiarius, while the West Necropolis fragment provides clearer evidence for the physical restraint of the condemned to the platform. Comparison with established Roman representations demonstrates that the Perge examples belong to the visual tradition of judicial execution in the arena. Significantly, however, they appear to depict not the fatal attack itself but stages immediately preceding it: the restraint of the prisoner and the controlled initiation of the animal attack. The fragments therefore provide rare iconographic evidence for the organisation and staging of damnatio ad bestias in Late Antique Perge.

İnfazın Sahnelenmesi: Perge’de Damnatio ad Bestias Üzerine Yeni İkonografik Kanıtlar

Abstract

Perge’den ele geçen ve damnatio ad bestias sahneleri betimleyen Geç Antik Dönem’e ait iki figürlü pişmiş toprak kapak parçası, bu cezalandırma biçimine ilişkin ikonografik örneklerin oldukça sınırlı olması nedeniyle özel bir önem taşımaktadır. Farklı arkeolojik bağlamlarda bulunmuş olmalarına karşın, iki parça aynı ikonografik programın birbirini tamamlayan unsurlarını korumaktadır. Stadium-Amfitiyatro örneğinde yükseltilmiş bir platform üzerindeki mahkûm, ona yaklaşan bir aslan ve kırbaç taşıyan bir bestiarius betimlenirken, Batı Nekropolisi’nden ele geçen parça mahkûmun platforma fiziksel olarak bağlanmış olduğunu daha açık biçimde göstermektedir. Roma dünyasından bilinen benzer betimlemelerle yapılan karşılaştırmalar, Perge örneklerinin arenadaki adli infazlara ilişkin görsel geleneğin bir parçası olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bununla birlikte Perge örnekleri, ölümcül saldırının kendisinden ziyade saldırının hemen öncesindeki aşamaları; mahkûmun platforma bağlanmasını ve hayvanın saldırıya yönlendirilmesini yansıtmaları bakımından önem taşımaktadır. Bu nedenle söz konusu parçalar, Geç Antik Dönem Perge’sinde damnatio ad bestias infazlarının organizasyonu ve sahnelenmesine ilişkin nadir ikonografik kanıtlar sunmaktadır.
