PRAGMATIC FEATURES OF POETIC MOTIFS IN UZBEK POETRY OF THE 1920S AND 1930S

Abstract

This article examines the pragmatic functions of poetic motifs in Uzbek poetry of the 1920s and 1930s, a period marked by intense ideological and aesthetic struggles. These historical conditions led poetic motifs to function not only as aesthetic devices but also as vehicles of ideological expression. Through the works of Batu, Cholpan, Aybek, and Hamid Alimjan, the study explores how motifs are shaped by the poet’s communicative intention and how their meaning depends on contextual knowledge, reader awareness, and intertextual relations. The opposing motifs of “hope” and “despair” in Batu and Cholpan, as well as Aybek’s use of the sea motif, demonstrate how pragmatic content emerges through poetic interaction. Connections with classical Eastern literature and Russian poetry further expand the semantic and pragmatic scope of these motifs. Ultimately, the article argues that the pragmatic dimension of poetic motifs constitutes a key component of poetic communication, shaping not only the aesthetic structure of the poem but also its ideological and interpretive impact on the reader.
