A FEMINIST CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF WOMEN REPRESENTATION IN TURKISH SONGS

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore how biased ideologies shaped and strengthened male dominance in Türkiye’s patriarchal society. Employing a critical discourse analysis, this study centers on analyzing a specific musical discourse that contributes to the ideology supporting the notion that women should conform to male hegemonic customs, ideals and rules. The objective is to reveal the hidden ideologies within the musical discourse. This study examines a collection of 31 songs performed by İbrahim Tatlıses using a qualitative approach and employing the principles of feminist critical discourse analysis. The contents of the songs pertaining to the theme have been translated from Turkish to English. Initially, a comprehensive examination of the songs' contents has been carried out. Moreover, an analysis of the chosen lyrics has been performed using three different frameworks produced by Fairclough, van Dijk and Wodak. As a consequence of this study, musical discourse provides a basis for the sustenance of male hegemony. there are many expressions containing insults, sexuality and violence towards women in the songs, which we consciously or unconsciously hear in our daily lives and have come to our ears since childhood. It puts emphasis on the ideology that women should act based on the traditions, norms and values of society. They show the power inequalities between women and men, which have been created by the society under the head of the culture. Considering that gender roles have been learned since childhood, the patriarchal ideology has been engraved in people's subconscious minds since childhood.
