Yüksek Negotium olarak Otium: Seneca’da Kamusal Meşguliyetin Yeniden Kurulması

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Seneca’nın De Otio (İnziva Üzerine) metninde otium’un (dinginlik/geri çekilme), negotium'un (kamusal meşguliyet) normatif özünü (ortak iyiye hizmet) yerel cumhuriyetin kurumsal sınırlarının ötesine taşıyarak, yeniden kuran özgün bir siyaset felsefesi argümanı olduğunu savunmaktadır. Stoacı gelenek, kamusal yaşama katılımı aklın buyurduğu bir görev olarak tanımlar. Ancak MS birinci yüzyılın İmparatorluk koşullarında kurumsal çöküş bu buyruğu yerine getirmeyi fiilen olanaksız kılmaktadır. Seneca bu kırılmayı, otium’u bir vazgeçişten ziyade, kathēkon’un (uygun eylem/görev) kendi iç mantığından zorunlu olarak türeyen felsefi bir yeniden-kuruluş biçiminde konumlandırarak yanıtlar. Mevcut literatürde Seneca uzmanı olarak bilinen Miriam T. Griffin, Emily Wilson ve Christopher Star, bu seçimin tarihsel ve ideolojik koşullarını güçlü biçimde açıklamış ancak argümanın Stoacı kathēkon geleneği için taşıdığı felsefi içeriği yeterince teorize etmemiştir. Bu çalışma söz konusu boşluğu tartışmaya açmak için De Otio metninin yakın okumasını, otium-negotium karşıtlığının, kavram tarihi analiziyle birleştirmektedir. Sonuç olarak “kamusal iş görme” formülasyonunun ve “iki cumhuriyet” argümanının, kathēkon doktrininin kendi mantığından türeyen bir dönüşümü yani yerel cumhuriyetten çekilme değil, kozmik cumhuriyete dönük yüksek negotium’u temsil ettiği gösterilmektedir.

Otium as High Negotium: The Reconstitution of Public Engagement in Seneca

Abstract

This study argues that in Seneca’s De Otio (On Leisure), otium (tranquillity/withdrawal) functions as an original argument in political philosophy that reconstitutes the normative essence of negotium (public engagement) -namely, service to the common goo- by projecting it beyond the institutional boundaries of the local republic. The Stoic tradition defines participation in public life as a duty commanded by reason. However, the institutional decay inherent in the Imperial conditions of the first century AD rendered the fulfillment of this mandate practically impossible. Seneca responds to this rupture not by positioning otium as a renunciation, but as a philosophical reconstitution necessarily derived from the internal logic of kathēkon (appropriate action/duty). While prominent scholars in the existing literature, such as Miriam T. Griffin, Emily Wilson, and Christopher Star, have powerfully elucidated the historical and ideological conditions of this choice, they have yet to sufficiently theorize the philosophical content the argument holds for the Stoic kathēkon tradition. To address this gap, this study integrates a close reading of the De Otio text with a conceptual-historical analysis of the otium-negotium antithesis. Consequently, it is demonstrated that the formulation of “the execution of the common weal” and the "two republics" argument represent a transformation emerging from the very logic of the kathēkon doctrine -representing not a withdrawal from the local republic, but a "high negotium" oriented toward the cosmic republic.
