A Conceptual Analysis and A Discussion on the Relationship between Individual and Society in Humboldt’s Theory of Bildung

Abstract

The concept of bildung is an important concept with a distinctive place in various areas such as theology, philosophy, education, and politics. Wilhelm von Humboldt, with his ideas developed through the concept of bildung, extended his ideas to both a theory of society and a theory of education and contributed to the discussions on theories of bildung. This work first provides an analysis on the concept of bildung and then, within the scope of Humboldt’s ideas and by examining personal, societal and inter-societal aspects of the concept, provides analyses on some key concepts and a discussion on the idea of humanity shaped by personal and societal formation processes, within the limits of philosophy of education and political philosophy.

Abstract

Bildung kavramı teoloji, felsefe, eğitim ve siyaset gibi birçok alanda kendine özgü yeri olan önemli bir kavramdır. Wilhelm von Humboldt bildung kavramı üzerinden hem bir toplum kuramı hem de bir eğitim kuramı oluşturacak şekilde genişlettiği görüşleriyle bu kavram odağındaki tartışmalara önemli bir katkı yapmıştır. Bu çalışma öncelikle bildung kavramına dair bir analizi sunmakla beraber, özellikle Humboldt’un bildung kuramına dair görüşleri çerçevesinde kavramın bireysel, toplumsal ve toplumlararası boyutlarını inceleyerek hem bazı kavramsal analizler ortaya koyar hem de bir bildung anlayışı üzerinden kişisel ve toplumsal biçimlenme süreçlerinin ortaya koyduğu insanlık idealini siyaset felsefesi ve eğitim felsefesi sınırlarında tartışır.
