Abstract

Abstract

Emotions do not only express different states of mind, they are also an important part of socialization. These qualities of emotions also bring about their consideration as a social issue. The potential of emotions to mobilize people can be used in election periods for a political purpose or in commercial advertisements to sell a certain product. Fear is perhaps one of the most debated emotions in this sense. It is worth examining that impersonation frauds are mostly used in a fear-focused manner in Turkey. Based on this framework, this article aims to discuss how fear is used to convince, persuade and mobilize people for an idea in the example of impersonation frauds. For this purpose, first, the concept of “emotion” was taken into consideration and the concept was examined in the context of universality vs. culturality discussions. Then, fear was considered from physiological, psychological and social/cultural aspects and its instrumental use was examined in the example of telephone fraud.
